What is a Chesterfield?

Chesterfield sofas feature rolled arms at the same height as the back, and typically have deep button tufting and nailhead trim.  The design was a common sight in Victorian libraries and parlors of nobility as far back as a century ago.

The Earl of Chesterfield

The Chesterfield is one of the most widely recognized and sought after sofa styles in the world, known for its luxury leather, deep buttoning, and classic style. According to legend, Lord Phillip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773), commissioned the first leather couch and settee. It had trademark features including deep buttoning, quilted leather upholstery, high arms, and a low seat base. After his death in 1773, the commissioned sofa was handed down to his godson, Solomon Dayrolles, a budding young diplomat.
Dayrolles was struck by the handsome chair and displayed it in his home for all his visitors to admire. It wasn’t long before more were crafted, and the iconic sofas evolved into a staple among Gentleman’s Clubs throughout London. The exquisite piece now provided seating for some of the most influential men around. It wasn’t long before the sofa became an ageless masterpiece, the image of refined seating, and a status symbol of the elite.

Popularity Across the Globe

As the British expanded their empire, new values, styles, and fashions followed into the growing colonies. The Chesterfield was one such item. It was exported and quickly introduced to developing territories, even as far as Canada, India, and Australia. By the 1920’s, the Chesterfield positioned itself as the quintessential style of the age–every self-respecting gentleman owned at least one. With its elegant look and distinguishing features, it’s easy to see how the Chesterfield sofa remains a global icon that transcends time.
